Custom Midi and midiout(); any difference?

Hello,
out of curiosity, is there any noticable diference between those two? i wonder if midiout is for cases like when you have 16 pads and you don´t want to have 16 Custom midi objects but a script with 16 different midiout() messages?
please let me know.
