Question about Lemur functionality with Ableton Live

Hey everybody, I'm about to get an Ipad 2 for christmas and really want to use Lemur within Ableton Live 8 but i have a few questions. I do not have max 4 live installed so I'm wondering if i can still properly sync Lemur in Ableton without it. I realize having m4l allows you to create/customize templates with the help of Mu but without it can i still create a rack within Lemur that I can midi map my effects to? I really would like my Lemur set up so it has all my effects mapped to the different physics parameters but i'm unsure if i have to have m4l to achieve this. I have an Akai Apc40 to control all my scenes so i just want the ipad to control all the effects.
I really want to make the jump into using lemur within live but am a bit intimidated by it's complex functionality. Could anyone also elaborate how the physics engine works? Would i be able to map say an auto filter to one of those bouncing balls? It looks really cool but i'm not sure if it's as easy as midi mapping an effect it.
Thanks for reading this and i really appreciate any feedback you guys could provide.
