Lemur pre-purchase question - combine templates

Hi folks,
Hope someone can answer some questions for me?
WARNING: I haven't ever used Lemur but have some understanding of iOS controllers (TouchOSC & TB Midi Stuff) and a (very) little knowledge about Ableton midi control scripts.
There are a lot of cool templates for Lemur and I would like to be able to take the best bits from various templates and combine them into a personalised master template. For example, I'd like to have basic clip and fader control of Ableton on two pages and then a template for Operator and so on.
I assume it's possible to combine templates? I found this thread but there seemed to be issues with scripting ...
http://forum.liine.net/viewtopic.php?f= ... ates#p2097
Also what about "legacy" templates ... any additional issues to using them?
If that's all possible (and a brief run through of how to go about it would be really helpful) would I be able to edit Livecontrol2 as the basis of my master controller, taking out any elements that I don't need and replacing them with others?
I assume combining Ableton templates gets into the land of midi remote scripts? Would the easiest way to deal with the remote scripts be to have multiple scripts running in Ableton for each of the different elements in Lemur?
Appreciate any thoughts/comments.
Peace,
Stew

Yes, you can combine templates fairly easily. When you copy the parts you want to clipboard, its just XML markup you are copying.
The post you refer to points out that the script might not have copied over successfully, because it does not reside in the area being copied. It probably sits at the top (root) of the template and therefore needs to be recreated in the new template (not particularly hard to do).
Livecontrol is great, although I have not found it easy deleting large parts of the template. Livecontrol makes a lot of use of sysex and it seems many of these sysex streams need to be in place for the template to communicate with live. I have seen somewhere on the forums that some people have had success in customizing it though, so it might be worth reading those threads first.
There's always the new push template created by wul and mu to control ableton live.
Im not too sure about legacy templates, but it seems the only real difference is the size of the template and therefore the elements within the template. You will probably just need to do some resizing of the elements to fit on your ipad nicely

hey xmonsta ... thanks for your thoughts.
I actually have Push already and love it. I'm looking to compliment it, that's why I probably don't feel the need for something as elaborate as Livecontrol 2 ... well not all of it anyway!
Having basic clip launch/record and faders while playing Push as an instrument would be very cool rather than toggling Push scenes. I'd also like to add templates for some of the Live instruments, Microtonic and Aalto (I believe they both have some sort of Lemur template floating around). I could do this all with TouchOSC or TB Midi Stuff and save myself the $50 and the time learning the Lemur environment but at the same time I don't want to have to start from scratch if others have already done the hard yards. Seems like a good community here too which is important.
Appreciate any other thoughts ...

Generally speaking, compi ing templates is easy....Specifically for some complex templates like LC2 for example there's a lot going on and a a lot of parameters involved - case in point, LC2 will even "break" if you just insert a new interface (Lemur tab) between the existing ones, the reason being, it sends (and receives) different sets of midi messages according to which interface you have selected....
So, in most of the cases combining templates is easy - I ve done the same with lots of stuff and I also learned Lemur through the process - but for a selected few, it looks impossible if you dont have a) a very good understanding of Lemur and b) avery good understanding of the structure of the template you want to alter which is translated to lots of hours into reading its scripts

Thanks Softcore,
I decided to jump in an buy Lemur anyway. And have downloaded you Microtonic V2 template too ... thanks!
I guess I can just make a backup of the original Livecontrol 2 template and then trying adding new pages to the end of it. If it doesn't work I'll see if I can pull it apart and try again. I guess that's one way to learn!
I'll have a look through the forum for any threads on customising LC2 too and see if they turn up anything I can use.

If adding a new page doesnt work, you can always show/hide a container (with your microtonic bits in the container) on top of the live control template.
Like so:

I had a go at adding Softcore's Microtonic template to Livecontrol 2 last night and it looks like it will work (called it z_Microtonic so it didn't go in between the LC2 pages - thanks Softcore).
LC2 seemed to be working ok ... although I'm so new to it I might have missed something. There are some issue with mapping things correctly with Microtonic (midi is received and can be mapped to controls but I can't differentiate between the same control on different instruments, for example the OSC/Noise balance appears as the same control for different slots) but I think that's because I didn't wrap the 'init' script when I imported it. Can I just copy the init code from the Microtonic template into the init for LC2?
I thought maybe I should package Microtonic 2 again using a different daemon port (I assume that's what the version 0, 1, 2 are Softcore?) as then maybe it's less likely to have conflicts with LC2?
Wish I had more time to play with this ... by the time I get home from work I'm knackered but I stayed up half the night messing around anyway
Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Appreciate any other advice you think might be relevant ... remember when it comes to Lemur specifically I know practically nothing!

Yup as far as the mtonic lemurized versions go, you got it right - I try to make the publicly available templates of mine work with more targets pre-configured, assuming most of the users already have one or two targets already covered and mapped!
BTW, I strnogly recommend you to learn the basics of Lemur - its a purchase you wont regret eitherways, but you are going to LOVE it when you learn more about it!
