Apple Lightning to USB adaptor for MIDI ?

Hello,

I am quite disappointed by the latency when transmitting OSC messages trough wi-fi from an iPad 4 to a MacBook Pro 2011, using an ad hoc network.

Therefore I am thinking about switching to MIDI with some additional hardware.

Could I use one of those Apple adapters without additional gear ?

Lightning to USB cable: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD818 ... -usb-cable
Lightning to USB camera adapter: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821 ... ra-adapter

If not, is there another solution ?

You need the Lightning to USB camera adapter:

The other one won't work. I use a USB to midi cable to plugin to a keyboard etc, I use one like this:

I don't know how you would connect to a laptop...would a USB to USB cable work??

Thanks but what I want is a wired MIDI connection from the iPad to the computer, not a connection from the iPad to a MIDI peripheral. Do I need an additional MIDI interface on each side of will the camera connection kit be enough ?

I think there might be something else going on with your wireless issue - we have osc running through a router between the lemur on an ipad 4 and a mac book pro or pc and the latency is under 100ms...

Under... ...100 ms ?

For musical purposes I'd actually expect figures under... ...10 ms at least! With usual wired MIDI gear I think it's even closer to 1 ms. You can't play music with 100 ms latency !

tbh, I think it's somewhere under 25ms ... I just have no way of quantifying it, so I didn't want to make a blanket statement. with that said, you're right, anything above 20ms starts to make music-playing a less than enjoyable experience to say the least :) as far as non-note triggering events are concerned though, imho, whatever lag we may have here is more than adequate. good luck with the interface issue and apologies for veering off topic!

It works with my Korg Kronos with the USB camera kit directly, but then I connect to its square USB port. I don't think you could hook up two straight usb ends, even if you had the right cable - they have a different purpose and it might even mean shorting.

It would definitely work with a midi interface on both ends but I can see why that would be cumbersome.
