(OSX) setting up midi connections for external synths

Post by hrb »

Hi,
I'm trying to use Lemur to program a Korg DW 8000.
But I'm having troubles getting Lemur to communicate with the synth. Right now I have the DW8000 connected to the MIDI IN/OUT of my soundcard (Focusrite Scarlett). I used the Lemur daemon to map Lemur Out 0 to Daemon In 0 and Lemur In 0 to Daemon Out 0. According to Midi Monitor I get the sysex messages when I change the slider values in the Lemur DW8000 template. But I don't know how to 'forward' them to the soundcards MIDI OUT. I thought I could use OSX MIDI setup but the daemon ports don't show up there.
Anyone who could help?

I have a Focusrite Saffire and this worked for me sending MIDI to external synths.

Make sure your Focusrite is on and visible in the MIDI setup window. Hit rescan if it's greyed out but on.
Open the info for the focusrite to get the name of the MIDI ports - on mine they are helpfully called MIDI with no way to change that.
Open Lemur Daemon
Add a connection
Daemon MIDI In - select the focusrite entry, then select a Lemur port to use.
Daemon MIDI Out - again select the focusrite entry, then a Lemur port to use.

I then get a routing like this:
MIDI routing

Thanks!
My problem is that even though the focusrite shows up in the MIDI setup (it's also not greyed out) the ports section in the properties view of the soundcard is greyed out and I can't add any ports to it. Right now it's just an empty list. Which explains why nothing shows up in the lemur daemon.
MIDI IN/OUT works fine in my DAWs though.

I just found out there is a MIDI Port - it's just unnamed. So a blank row shows up in the lemur daemon which i can connect to Lemur In and Out. So my setup looks like your last 2 rows. Only instead of 'MIDI' I have a blank column.
However: the remote port entries are red instead of black. So I guess this means it's not connected. Even though it connects fine with Daemon In and Out. Do I also have to set something on the iPad?

On the MIDI routing page on the Lemur you should have the complementary settings. You probably have to make sure the daemon is running first.
To be fair I am using a Legacy for that particular routing so it might be different. I am using the newest daemon for it though so I would expect it to be the same. I'll grab my iPad in a bit and have a look.

Its probably worth seeing if there are any updated drivers for your soundcard. I would expect the midi port to have a name.
