wireless access point delay - any recomendations?

I've tested a few wireless access points and often get delays that make osc control over an ipad unbearable. I'm aware of being able to do an adhoc direct connection but im not interested in talking about that here.

what i would like to know is if anyone can recommend high quality low latency wireless access points, or just their own access point that perhaps works fine for them?

don't know exactly what is meant with access point. I use a router (Asus RT-N66U), and it has no noticeable latency. Around 15ms (fluctuating, +/- 10ms) as far as I can see, but it's difficult to measure. I don't trust those numbers, they can go up to 300ms, and the performance or the felt latency remains the same.

A wireless access point sets up a wireless network, without the adsl router built in necersarily. I chose to get a seperate adsl router to plug into the access point because i know it was going to be an issue, so this keeps it more modular until i get the right bit of gear.

The distance from ipad to access point is important, as well as walls, furniture inbetween. I get latencies as low as 3 msec with a WIRED connection on my pc to the access point and a wireless connection on the ipad, as long as the signal is strong on the ipad side. If you are on pc there are free apps that can do network pings for you, and also show you what other networks are in your neightbourhood. Changing my network channel in the router from 1 to 13 ( this frequecy was free, everybody else was also on channel one) made a huge difference for me. Also it seems your subnet settings are important, 255.255.255.0 worked best for me. I have also reason to believe fixed IP adresses sometimes give problems on pc discovering the ipad.

Check my other post on connection and latency issues here:

Guys (if guys ye be) . . . the latency incurred when using a WAP is due to the network in Infrastructure Mode.

It's inherent.

Ad hoc is your only avenue for low-latency wireless comms.

[edit]

I'm unaware of any issues specific to, or more importantly DUE to static IPs and (Windows?) PCs. The opposite appears to be the case, in fact.

i was having problems connecting with the steinberg ICpro app that went away when not using static ip- adresses.. Lemur and other network things work fine with static IP, but I was thinking maybe bonjour or steinbergs way of using bonjour might invoke the problem.

One thing I don' t understand about ad hoc: can you use a "normal" wireless router ( i.e. the one that is connected to my computer and internet acces point in my home already) to create an ad- hoc network, or does it have to be a dedicated, extra, usb or PCI( e) wireless network card, installed separately in my desktop computer? And thus would I " see " two wireless networks, one " current" and one " ad- hoc" if it is possible to create an extra ad hoc network with my current router?

re: Ad hoc to a router - I don't think so, at least I'm unaware of any router or AP that supports this. The protocol was designed with the express purpose of cutting those out of the loop as it were.

You could be on to something with the Bonjour business. That bears investigating, mehinks.

I don' see what this post above has to do with the subject? Won' t a jammer ( actualy another transmitter sending out high power signals that interfear with and distort normal signals ) make things worse? I followed Joe's advice, I ordered a fast usb wireless network dongle that supports the creation of ad hoc networks, ( 15 euro) so I can create an AD HOC network ( not possible with my current setup, a normal router). I' ll post the results later..

thanks for all the suggestions guys - going adhoc with a dongle is bullet proof.
