Lemur - VU Meter?

hi,
i´m pretty new with lemur/iPad1 iOS5.1.1. Jamming arround with lemur i´m really missing the vu metes. i was wondering if lemur is supporting vu meters at all? all the templates which in downloaded from the liine community and the ipad/lemur videos i watched on youtube, doesn´t seem to have vu meters implemented. is the correct? why is that?

thanks a ton to this community and all the efforts and love put into the templates...

The problem is not with Lemur - the problem is with nearly every software NOT sending midi data to represent volume level.
Case in point: Traktor - one of the few software that I know of where you can map the level meters to midi, therefore you can also make Lemur display the levels (usually by using multislider object).
Second case in point: Mackie Protocol which sends pressure channel data to represent level meters - again, this works in Lemur too.

In other words, if you can transform level meter data into midi (or OSC for that matter), Lemur will hapily ride along! ;)

aha, i understand now what the problem is, but i still don´t understand not why? Thanks for answer, but this sound a bit to me like "it is like that, it has always been like that and because everybody does it" So in this case, actually the Problem is Lemur :!: . The question is, :?: why does only a very few software sending out this data? TouchAble does it, beatsurfing does it, just to name some...

I havent tried beatsurfing so I dont know but we are not comparing the same stuff here...Touchable is a specific controller for a specific DAW. Lemur is an application that allows you to build controller for ANYTHING that can be controlled via midi or OSC. ;)

Lastly, you missed the point - level meters ARE possible in Lemur - it depends on the developer of the Lemur project to implement them - most people don't because its a lot of work/code - but its not impossible. Build your own control surface script for Ableton (like Touchable has), communicate with Lemur via OSC and there you have it.

you should give beatsurfing it at try ;)

true ! i missed that point indeed. i was only wondering because it seems that there is no template at all implemented vu meters. i tried last night do it, i might have a closer look to the manual

yep. nice xmas project, if it gets to boring just staring at the xmas tree

appreciate your help and hints.
thanks again and a merry xmas

Mxmas to you too! Gonna try beatsurfing for sure! ;)

As for template with meters Im sure there is one already in the form of mackie emulation for Ableton Live and the brilliant Traktor26 template. I have also used the logic of the first one (somewhat altered) for my own level meters in a mackie emulation for Sonar. ;)

edit: here's the Ableton Live-Mackie one

thanks for the link. just downloaded the file which i´m able to open and to manually midimap to abletons faders and knobs. but not vu meter showing. i´m missing here something. do i have to map the vu meter in lemur editor manually? but to what?
as i said, i´m pretty new to lemur so sometimes i cannot see the wood for the trees. :|

Ahhh! You dont even have to map this! This is a emulation of the infamous Mackie Control Pro

http://www.mackie.com/products/mcupro/

In other words, delete all the mappings you did and just go to Ableton Live preferences and add a Mackie Control "control surface" (on top of the midi ins-outs) and then just select the midi in and out that correspond to your Lemur (Daemon needed) ;)

The advantage of the emulation is that, like the original, it dynamically maps itself to the parameters of the software. If the emulation is done correctly (which I do not know because I havent tested this one - you need to read the manual for Mackie Control for Ableton Live in order to get the whole picture) every possible parameter of the DAW AND the plug ins used in a project can be controlled! ;)

edit: here is the complete manual for it

you are the greatest. works like a charm now. have to have a closer look to the manual. a lot of potencial here...
thanks a ton. :P

IF you are a beginner with Lemur and generally with midi-mangling this whole Mackie thing may seem a bit complicated to you right now, but well what it all boils down to is that you basically design the surface that you (visually like) and then use the same CC parameters-notes-midi messages the original hardware has to emulate it. For this of course you need the midi specs (map) of the hardware but luckily there is a guy who has documented it.
http://home.comcast.net/~robbowers11/MCMap.htm
(still, notice that the mappings of the level meters are not described in this page, but from other sources it is confirmed that it works via channel pressure)

The relatively hard stuff to understand in these emulations are the scripts used for the scrub wheel and the relative Vpots (pan knobs by default). In time though... ;)

So finishing this up, if something in the template you downloaded doesnt work or is not right just how you'd like it implemented you just change it in the Lemur editor - perhaps for example you want larger faders and some options hidden and displayed in a container show or hidden via script or stuff like that. Also imagine that you can still create additional pages in the template with your own mappings (for example static mappings on plug ins etc etc).
