Can I enable MIDI thru?

Currently using iRig MIDI.
I'd like to connect my keyboard controller to the iRig MIDI in, and iRig MIDI out to a hardware sound module (Yamaha Motif Rack ES), and use Lemur to send program changes to the sound module while passing messages from the keyboard controller straight through to the sound module.
When I turn on MIDI Soft Thru in the settings for the iRig Midi app, it works. But stops when I exit the iRig app. There doesn't seem to be a way to keep that soft thru function working in the background.
when I run Lemur, the sound module responds to the program changes, but it doesn't get any of the messages from the keyboard controller. I tried mapping Lemur's input and output to the iRig... but the sound module only sees messages from Lemur.
It works fine when I have everything connected to a computer where I can use MIDI-OX or other utilities to merge the messages from Lemur and the keyboard controller, and then send them all to the sound module. But I'll have no computer on gigs. I just want Lemur to be the control interface for the sound module. It seems like I should be able to do this without having to use an external midi merge box.
Is there something that I'm missing?
