unless there is a specific reason why I should need the iConnect-2, then I would go for the iConnect-1 or - better - the CCK as I would prefer to have less possible boxes, wall warts and things to bring around.

Hi
If 'all' you require is 1x MIDI-Din that will connect to either your computer or iDevice then yes the iCM 1 would do fine
If you are after the most minimal setup then again yes.
If you already have a box or two that you are taking anyway then for what it adds the iCM 2 is the better choice . . .
Still awaiting release of full details of these devices anyway . . .
Cheers

Re: cable connection between Ipad and Pc
Since I already am using a Motu MIDI Express interfacing my Mac Pro tower, I am hoping I can get by with a MIDI mobilizer 2. I really just need some way to get MIDI in and out of my iPad and into my Mac. I mostly want to use Lemur to control sample libraries in Kontakt 5. The docking station looked pretty cool, but it had a lot of bells and whistles I will never use and it looked like you would have to install it without a cover and I use my iPad nearly everything so I have a heavy duty US military grade case on it that would be a pain to take on and off. I should get the new unit in a few days, so we'll see how it works. It looks pretty simple, just one channel of MIDI in and out and it set me back $75 with a couple of female to female MIDI cord connectors as the unit only comes with 5' cords. I will let you know how it works out.

Update: I got the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer II. I plugged the little interface into my iPad and the 2 MIDI cords connect it to my MOTU MIDI Express interface. Works just great with Lemur controlling Logic and Kontakt from my iPad.

I'm using an IK iRig MIDI to connect the iPad to the PC (via MIDIsport 2x2 interface). Easy to set up in Lemur and latency is non existent as far as I can't tell.
