Launchpad remapper

Post by joebataz »

I'm trying to get a Launchpad to talk to a Lemur app to translate what's coming out of the Launchpad to different channels/notes. Does anyone have an example of a Launchpad MIDI reader that works? I've been playing with this for a couple of days and am baffled why I'm not getting MIDI into Lemur from the Launchpad.

Thanks,

The Launchpad only sends note ons - note offs from the "matrix" buttons while the upper row buttons send CC messages.

That said, and even though it might be posible to use Lemur as a "midi translator-transformer" it will require a lot of scripting and MIDI_ARGS. I think Max/MSP or even "Bome's Midi Translator" are more suitable for these kinds of stuff.

edit: You can also check out my website for a free utility I have designed, LP-72, which translates Launchpad messages into notes in specific midi channels and CC messages with 3 discrete pages (free Max runtime required).

Thanks Softcore. I tried Bome's which looked like it might work but couldn't get it to recognize the Launchpad. Still talking with their tech support on that one. The whole point would be moot if only Novation fixed Automap. I'll probably catch a lot of flak over my next comment but it has been my experience that using Automap hoses up a lot of midi stuff, including the Lemur app and daemon and I've never gotten it to "play nice" with my configuration. As I mentioned my working application suite consists of Traktor 2.6, Resolume Avenue, Live 8.32, CueMix FX, DMXIS, and kJams Pro ALL running at the same time. Surprisingly it all works very nicely even with the 2 iPads running my Lemur app, LDJ controlling the software. I'm using an iMac 3.06gHz running 10.7.5 sending all the audio via Firewire to a MOTU Ultralite MK3 and then to a Mackie ProxFX12. I had run into some latency issues with Avenue (video mixer) but solved it by pulling the audio from the video clips and and using both a video and an audio file in Avenue. When I put a video clip into Avenue I deleted the video's audio and attach the seperate audio file to the "cell" where the video resides.
Scripting in Lemur is no biggie and if Native Instruments ever gets their head out of a dark place and opens up the Traktor Remix decks to other MIDI controllers instead of their overpriced F1 then again the whole point becomes moot. Well time to stop wasting your time here.
Again, thanks for the input and I'm going to give the LP-72 utility a quick look.

I think then, your best bet is to wait for the "unlocking" of the remix decks - i really don't think they will keep it "locked" to F1 for too long.

As for the Automap thing, i remember downloading it to test it and as soon as I realized it was going to "wrap" all my VST plug ins in order to work, I just uninstalled it without second thoughts and never looked back! lol ;)

edit: Also, Novation announced yesterday a new product (midi keys and controller) with an interesting app included: something that seems to be a Launchpad emulation for iPad

I hope they don't because I REALLY like the layout of the Launchpad (8X8 grid). I tried moving my clips into Live but try as I will they just never seem to sound as good coming out of Live as they do coming out of Traktor. The layout of the F1 is just too sparse for me. Yes it does a lot of nice things but I prefer having everything on one "screen" instead of having to make multiple presses to get the sound I want. Plus with my Lemur LDJ now having a very usable sequencer working my need for Live (to play synced midi tracks to my DMXIS) is pretty much eliminated. One less thing running.

Again, thanks for the input.
