Stop the SPAM
Re: Stop the SPAM
Hi
Believe me I know it is annoying - I have to ban and delete it all . . ..
The backend of Forums such as these are in constant battle with spammers -
The security systems are continually upgraded and then 'cracked' requiring another patch . . .
We are awaiting yet another patch to solve these latest breakins
The other option is that I have personally vet all new memberships
We hope to have this solved soon - thanks for your patience.
At least I'm keeping it under control - I have seen many Forums that don't . . .
Cheers
MM

Re: Stop the SPAM
I moderate the pure data forum, and we also get a lot of spam.
The problem seems to be that it is no longer just automated. There are actual people (mostly in india and china) who are paid to do this now. Anything that distinguishes you as a person (captcha, etc) is also going to work for them. So it is very difficult to do anything other than manually deleting them.
What seems to be needed is a global database of known spam IP's that is constantly updated with spam reports from forums such as this.

Re: Stop the SPAM
Yes - it is a problem
I deleted over 200 posts from 1 person the other day . . .
And then there are the ones that look semi-genuine but have changing add links for crap in the signature
I have been banning IP's for 1 month because many are dynamically assigned I don't ban permanently
And banning UserNames permanently

Re: Stop the SPAM
I have to suggest vBulletin. I run 4 installs of it for myself and clients and there is something to be said about having a team of paid people who are responsible for security and the likes. It is $200 well spent.
We have some issues with spam, but we've recently installed a product called Are You a Human that is stopping robot spammers dead in their tracks. I think they have a plugin for phpBB as well.
However, with any open source web software the exploitation factor increases ten fold. Not only does the availability of the code make it much easier to get ahold of and scour for weaknesses, but the fact that it is good and free means that it is widely used and therefore much more lucrative to find these exploits and build bots to milk them...
Anyway, consider those two bits, this looks like a pretty vanilla install so if you wanted to jump over to vBulletin importing the current data into their database format would be a snap...
