I just got an iConnectMIDI today. I excitedly hooked everything up only to find that the latency of my iPad going through the iConnectMIDI to my laptop is the same as over my wireless network. I checked my routing several times over and even shut off the wi-fi to make sure it wasn't being used. Still no improvement. The hits are late and at times the noteOn messages are simply dropped.
I connected my USB keyboard and the hits are triggered the instant I press the key, no latency problems at all.
Am I missing something?
I'm quite disappointed... this box was far too expensive for it to give me absolutely no improvement in latency over wi-fi transmission...
iConnectMIDI Latency???
Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
indeed very surprising. iConnectMIDI should be one of the best connections for iDevices, with no noticeable latency. What synth/sampler are you playing? What audio card?
Formant+Eurorack, PPG wave 2.2, Korg MS-20, etc., EWI 4000s, QuNeo, etc., Mixbus32c, u-he, MadronaLabs, Samplemodeling, NI, etc., iPad2/4/Pro
Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
Hey, sorry I've been slow to reply. I'm graduating and my thesis show is this week, so I've been tirelessly working on making sure everything is in place.
I got in contact with iConnectivity and they gave me some suggestions for things to try out. May I add, their customer service has been excellent, and I can tell they are very committed to making sure their users get the best product experience possible.
I updated the firmware on the iConnectMIDI per their suggestion, and I did notice a marked improvement in latency. This improvement, combined with the excellent MIDI routing options now available to me, have made it a great addition to my rig.
I'm still wondering if it's operating as fast as possible or if there's anything I can do to improve my signal path. When I plug my USB keyboard directly into my computer, I'm able to trigger MIDI instruments in Ableton virtually instantly. On the other hand, I still notice a little bit of latency when using my iPad through the iConnectMIDI. I'm using the drum rack template on the Lemur app. The notes trigger just a fraction of a beat after I hit the pads. I've contacted them about this and will post an update to the thread when I hear back.
On another note, does anyone know of any adapters I can plug into my iPad that would allow me to power the device while connected to the iConnectMIDI? That's really one of my only remaining concerns with the device. Otherwise, I'm much happier and am looking forward to clearing up these minor issues so I can begin getting a lot of use out of it.

Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
maybe there is something wrong with the USB chipset? It may work for the keyboard, but not for the iConnect? Or still faulty firmware? I would try with other computers and software.
I have an IK iRigMIDI, a single in/out interface for the iPad (that can be powered during use), and it has no noticeable latency.
With a less reliable ad-hoc network one should have no noticeable latency as well, like with a MIDI keyboard. The only problem is MIDI clock. Note On and CC's transmit below 10ms, probably below 5ms.

I use the following device to power my 3rd Gen iPad whilst using my iConnect Midi - CableJive DockStubz :L05 wrote: On another note, does anyone know of any adapters I can plug into my iPad that would allow me to power the device while connected to the iConnectMIDI? The only extra thing you require is a micro usb lead (one of the thicker 'power handling' variety) to go from your iPad's 10W USB Power Adapter into the micro USB slot on the side of the DockStubz. It's a perfect solution.
I'm not sure about your hardware setup but having tried a number of different IOS midi interfaces I've found the iConnectMidi to be the most solid in terms of timing (when interfacing with OS X Lion). I've also got an iDock & iRig and the iConnectMidi spanks them both and is the only unit that I feel confident to take out for performances (the others feel like flimsy consumer products).

Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
Very cool! Thanks for the heads up, Jon. I haven't heard back from them yet, but it's been the weekend. In the meantime, I've been pretty happy with my experience after installing that firmware update, which helped a ton.
For anyone curious about the firmware update process, it's pretty quick and painless. Just followed the instructions and was back up and running in a matter of minutes.

Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
So I ordered this thing after reading what you wrote, and turns out it doesn't work with the iConnectMIDI. As soon as I plug the microUSB cable in to power my iPad, the iConnectMIDI disconnects from my iPad. How is it you are able to get it to work?jonmoore wrote:I use the following device to power my 3rd Gen iPad whilst using my iConnect Midi - CableJive DockStubz :L05 wrote: On another note, does anyone know of any adapters I can plug into my iPad that would allow me to power the device while connected to the iConnectMIDI? Re: iConnectMIDI Latency???
I'm not quite sure as I have never encountered any problems. My only guess is that it's a power issues that's being caused by the micro USB cable (it needs to be one of the thicker power carrying variety) or by the power adapter that the USB cable is plugged into - I'm using one of the official Apple adapters.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
