Well truth is, if you are using an external step sequencer, you dont need arming at all.....I have a couple of VSTs set up with the monitor selector of Live to "In" (so when they are triggered, their output is indeed audible)....but, as you said, I have set the midi input on different midi channels.
Then it is just a matter of changing the step sequencer midi channel in order to select which VST Im currently triggering. I used to do this with "keys" that send note ons-offs in a seperate page in my Lemur-gig template, and I also had some loopers after the VST synths to record on the fly my playing....I had thought this was best for another reason too: after playing some 1-2 or 4 bars, i could record on the looper, then switch the patch of the VST and continue building on it without having to resort in a multitude of adding plug ins.
Couple of months ago also got an Arturia beatstep, which again, can be set to change the midi channel the sequnece is transmitted with a simple push of a button....
So, yeah....no arming invloved in my set up indeed.
radio buttons to send note off when not the active button?

Re: radio buttons to send note off when not the active butto
I get that I can just change the MIDI channel. the Nord Beat app allows this, and was one of my ideas.
which should work, but requires it to be stopped, as to avoid the wrong kit to be played whilst changing channel.
could some radio buttons be set to specify a specific transpose, with all kits in the same drum rack with transpose used to select the kit?
then I could change the kit on the one beat.
I have a MIDI keyboard that I use, which has an awkward method of changing the channel on.
wondering if there is a way of selecting which synth is used, instead of the channel.
maybe set it to play all synths (all tracks armed on the same channel), but control the volumes of each to mix them, and I could map the on/off button of each.
could the radio buttons be used to select between the synths that are switched on?

Re: radio buttons to send note off when not the active butto
I've got radio buttons working with the track activator for each track, using control change.
it works as I need, however the synths are all set on the same channel, so as to receive the midi from my keyboard.
I need to run separate channels, so that I can assign program change to select patches on each of the synths independent of each other.
I am thinking Bome's Midi Translator could duplicate the midi from my keyboard to all required channels.
unless there is a neater solution? (it's too awkward to change the midi channel on my midi keyboard, whilst live)
