Control Change CC#123 doesnt get recognised?

Post by Nastybeats »

Hi

i have a pad with 16x8 rows on channel 12, which gives me themax of the controllable 127 CC messages on that channel.
however everything is fine, except number 123 doesnt get recognised at all.
Ableton Live 9 receives information like all the others but while in midi learn mode, it just doesnt detect it.

thanks in advance

Hi
You really need to check out the MIDI specification http://www.midi.org/techspecs/midimessages.php
See Table 3 listing the standard definition of MIDI CCs

There are several that you really should avoid using in many circumstances - 120 up are some of those . .
CC 123 is All Notes Off - it is possibly working perfectly ok for what it is supposed to do - yep, turns notes off . . .

does this list apply to all channels?
So does that mean, that i should only use "Undefined" Control numbers for controlling ableton and synths?
thats pretty limiting then

For some reason, completely unknown to me, I have also found out that CC 123 is reserved by Ableton Live on all channels and you cant use it to map it to any other parameter or plug in. All else seem to work though - you dont need to use only the undefined CCs.

Yes - the list applies to all channels . . .
No - you don't have to only use the 'undefined' ones but you do need to be aware of these standards for when stuff like this happens . . .
Often more of an issue with hardware synths that may have stuff pre mapped but can crop up elsewhere as well . . .

The reason CC 123 is reserved is due to those standard controller meanings it is All Notes Off . . .
All Notes Off is universally used as the Panic button to stop stuck notes.
