Better FPS from ipad 2/3/4?

Post by hakonandersson »

Dear all,

I hope you can answer an easy question I have.. My current project is rather resource intensive, and presently, after much optimisation - I'm running at around 19 FPS on my old ipad 1.

Since my project performs a lot of on-the-fly calculations based upon my input, I'm finding that that applications I'm controlling via lemur are somewhat lagged in terms of their response to my lemur inputs. I've confirmed (by removing resource intensive modules) that the higher the FPS (40+), the better response times I see in apps such as Ableton.

Therefore, I can only presume that I can use the FPS as a good measure of end responsiveness.

Will the ipad 2/3/4 offer me drastically improved FPS over the ipad 1, or is what I'm seeing more a limitation of my project or the lemur app itself?

Best regards,
haks.

You should check in the specifications whether the CPU of iPad 2/3/4 is more powerful than the one from iPad 1. I am quite sure for the iPad 4 but I don't know for other models.

I'm also not sure, but I believe iPads 2 and 3 have a faster CPU. iPad4 again a faster one. Additionally to that, there is also the option to optimise the scripts for performance. I'm not a programmer so I don't know this exactly, but from what I've gathered it is more easy to compute logical functions than arithmetic functions, even if they do the same thing. Loops and on-frame scripts with optimised functions can improve the overall performance I guess.

Next to the computing there is also the graphics which can decrease performance. Especially since Lemur 4 there is a severe performance loss if there are dozens of Knob objects in a template (also when they're hidden). iPad4 (and I guess iPad3 as well) with its higher resolution performs even worse than iPad2, in such a situation.

So, the question you asked is not that easy at all. With the current Lemur version, I'd say an iPad2 has the best overall performance. This can change with a newer (or older) Lemur version.

Hi guys,

Really appreciate your replies. I managed to borrow an ipad 2 today to test my project on - immediately was granted 40FPS (from 18FPS)..

However, I've just now ordered a refurb ipad 4.. My project does contain a number of knob objects.. so I'll let you know how it performs on the ipad 4 with this in mind.

One other question - is there a way to run the 'non-retina' enhanced version of lemur on the new retina ipads? I guess if so, this would allow us to maximise performance on the iPad 4..

Cheers!

Each iteration of iPad has a faster processor, the iPad 3 is supposed to have a slightly faster processor than iPad 2, but it has much more ram so runs a lot better in my experience.

The mini is the same as the iPad 2, but with more ram.
