Can't launch editor

Hi,

Setup : macbookpro 2009, running 10.11.6. Lemur editor 5.3.2

The editor used to work fine on my mac until yesterday: it now never completes launching, i.e. all menus do not show (see attached screenshot), and no GUI ever shows up. I tried reinstalling, and even downgrading to 5.2.2, but I'm still getting the problem.
I also tried launching from terminal, it seems the app is stuck trying to establish a connection on port 9000:

I can't point my finger on what could have changed in my setup to prevent the editor from launching. Does anyone have an idea of where I should look at?
